Nelson Navy Nation Maritime Museum

A major new gallery – Nelson, Navy, Nation is set to open at the National Maritime Museum on the Trafalgar day, October 21, 2013. It is a permanent gallery and is about the life of Admiral Lord Nelson and explores how the Royal Navy shaped everyday lives.

Trafalgar Day is to commemorate the victory won by the Royal Navy, commanded by Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson over the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805. A ceremony at the statue of Lord Nelson in the Bull Ring is conducted to celebrate the anniversary in Birmingham. This ceremony includes Lord Mayor of Birmingham, men and women of HMS Forward, Sea cadet units, The Nelson Society and many more.

The Nelson Navy, Nation gallery portrays the glorious revolution of 1688 to the defeat of Napoleon in 1815. This new gallery brings over 250 star objects from the museum’s collections. It holds displays of Admiral Lord Nelson’s iconic uniform, personal items, special and also weird Nelson memorabilia, Napoleon’s personal letter to his daughter Horatia, an example of the mourning rings worn by his family, close friends and his family at his funeral and also the commemorative items collected by his devotees.

The Sailors as well as Admirals, landlubbers as well as Seadogs, women as well as men and ordinary life as well as the heart of battle and British people’s perception of themselves.
