Madame Tussauds is a world famous wax museum in Marylebone Road, London exhibiting wax works of historical royal figures, sports stars, film stars and infamous murderers. The history of the legendary wax figurine museum started in Paris, France. The founder of the museum, Marie Tussaud (1761- 1850) was born in France and learnt the craft of wax modeling during her childhood in her home country from her teacher Dr.Curtuis. She developed her skills and moved to London at the beginning of the 19th century after seven years of her marriage with Francois Tussaud. For many years she exhibited her collections (including her teacher’s collections) in different places.
In 1835, Tussaud opened a museum in Baker Street and settled there. Her works on the victims of French Revolution gained her recognition and she named the portion as the Chamber of Horrors. It also had the wax figures of murderers and criminals. Presenting popular figures in her museum, she exhibited a self portrait in 1842 and today, wax figure of Marie Tussaud is on display at the entrance of the museum.
