The Port of Felixstowe is situated in Felixstowe, Suffolk. In 2011, it was ranked the world’s 35th busiest container port and Europe’s sixth busiest. Currently, it is known to be United Kingdom's busiest container port.

The Felixstowe Dock and Railway Company runs the port. Felixstowe handles about 42% of Britain’s container trade.

The port has two main container terminals, Trinity and Landguard, as well as a RO-RO terminal. Each terminal has its own rail terminal which connects to the Felixstowe Branch Line.

Current developments

The Felixstowe South terminal is being reconstructed and work began on this project in 2008. Extra large boxes can be accommodated by the gantries in the new terminal now, which will have a clearance of 16m. About 750m of sea wall is expected to be completed by the end of 2010. Transfer from Felixstowe can be through the taxis. Make use of them for a comfortable ride.

As of September of 2011, The Port of Felixstowe had formally thrown open the UK's first shipping berths competent of taking the next generation of giant container ships.

The ships, which will arrive in 2013, can carry 18,000 containers.

Felixstowe made it known that 1,500 new jobs will be created by its expansion plans - 680 directly employed by the port, with another 820 at suppliers.
