World's Most Exclusive Department Stores
Harrods has come a long way since its initial setup as a small shop in 1824. The founder Charles Henry Harrod developed the shop as a wholesale grocery store at Stepney in 1834 after breaking partnerships in his business. In 1851, a new shop was developed in Knightsbridge with just a single room employing 3 people. Charles Digby Harrod had the idea of developing his dad’s business and started retail operations by selling medicines, perfumes, stationery, fruit, and vegetables in the store. By 1880, the shop expanded rapidly and the employee count increased to 100.
In December 1883, the store was burnt to ground. But, Harrod didn’t lose his hope. He worked hard in his business and offered the same service to customers and saw huge profits. He constructed a new store in the same place and the operations were expanded further. In 1885, Digby Harrod took charge of the store after his father’s death. In 1889, the shop’s shares were open in the stock exchange. In 1985, Fayed brothers purchased Harrods and today, the store is so large that it offers all ranges of goods for customers.
